Summary: Prototype 2 is a sequel to the first game that was released in 2012. The sequel follows a new protagonist named James Heller, a US marine who discovers that his wife and daughter are both dead. From there, he fights his way through both Blackwatch and the infected to find the person responsible: Alex Mercer, the protagonist of the first game.
Story:
I believe the best place to start this review is the story of both of the games. Let me start with Prototype.
Prototype’s Story:
Set in Manhattan, Prototype follows Alex Mercer, a powerful shapeshifter who has amnesia. While finding out what happened to him and his past, Alex has to fight two factions: Blackwatch, a controversial military force that specializes in containing viral outbreaks, and the infected.
At the start of the game, Alex finds the location of his sister, Dana Mercer, by consuming (an essential power Alex has that will be further discussed in the powers section) a Blackwatch officer. After saving her from Blackwatch, Dana decides to help Alex by locating key targets to regain his past.
When in free roam (and some throughout the story), Alex can consume targets that are part of the WOI, or the Web Of Intrigue. These targets give key details on Elizabeth Greene (the main antagonist of the game), the truth about Hope, Idaho (an essential component in the story), and ultimately about Alex Mercer’s past. Throughout the story and consuming the WOI targets, the truth about Elizabeth Greene and Hope, Idaho becomes clear.
The Truth Behind Hope, Idaho And Elizabeth Greene:
The story of the creation of Hope, Idaho began with Carnival I. Carnival I was a Blackwatch test that introduced the Redlight virus, one of the two viruses mentioned in the story. They injected this virus into chimps and the results were beneficial.
The chimps gained better results in intelligence, development, strength, etc. After the significant success of Carnival I, it was time to start Carnival II. However, rather than using chimps, they were going to use humans as test subjects.
This is where Hope, Idaho comes in. The government wanted to make an artificial town for Carnival II. The town was a melting pot of people from different races/ethnicities. About 461 people participated in being subjects for the Redlight virus. At first, there weren’t any negative effects on the subjects.
However, after Elizabeth Greene was injected with the virus on August 8th, 1968, the previous test subjects started protecting Elizabeth, almost like a hivemind. As a final decision, Blackwatch nuked Hope, Idaho and transferred Elizabeth to Gentek.
Alex Mercer’s Past:
The story behind Hope, Idaho, and Elizabeth Greene also plays a crucial role in Alex’s past. Alex Mercer used to be a scientist at Gentek, a genetic engineering research company. Alex was the head researcher for the Blacklight project which is “supposed” to cure diseases, however, the actual purpose of the new virus was to create an upgrade to the Redlight virus, the virus that was used for the carnival experiments and Hope, Idaho.
To create the Blacklight virus, Gentek used a blood sample from Elizabeth Greene. Comparing both viruses, the Blacklight virus was much stronger compared to Redlight. The Blacklight virus showed different effects such as:
- Too many infections
- It’s able to spread widely in different areas
- Rates of morality are lower compared to Redlight
Among other effects. The scientists soon became suspicious of where the sample came from, including Alex. Alex began a personal investigation along with his sister to find out what really is the purpose of the Blacklight virus. Unfortunately, he dug too deep that Blackwatch declared to kill the scientists who knew about their involvement with Gentek and Blacklight.
Alex was able to take a sample of the virus in a vial as insurance. But, the agents working for Blackwatch were able to track him down and cornered him at Penn Station. Alex threw the vial of the virus on the ground as the agents shot him. Thinking Alex was dead, the virus entered his body, repurposing him cell by cell. So the Alex that you are playing in the game is the virus.
Towards the end of the game, Alex eventually consumes Elizabeth Greene. Blackwatch’s final verdict for containing the virus was to nuke Manhattan, just like they did to Hope, Idaho. Ultimately, Alex finds the last person responsible for everything and stops the nuke after the fight with the supreme hunter.
Prototype 2 Story:
Now for the second one, Prototype’s 2 story takes place 14 months after the first outbreak. Prototype 2 follows a new protagonist named James Heller, a US marine who is sent to the red zone (one of the zones in the game) on a suicide mission with other marines. However, James and the other marines tank were interrupted. James survived, but the other marines died.
James then spots Alex Mercer in the red zone. James tries attacking Alex, however, his attacks have little effect. Impressed by James’ pursuit, Alex infects James with the Blacklight virus. In the beginning, Alex infected James because he needed assistance in bringing down Blackwatch and Gentek, which we’re doing controversial experiments on humans.
In the yellow zone (the zone you start in the game), he meets Father Guerra, a priest who helps James in taking down both factions. Towards the last mission of the yellow zone, Father Guerra shows James CCTV footage of what caused the second outbreak. As it turns out, Alex was responsible for the second outbreak and the death of James’s family.
Outraged by this, James is determined to stop Blackwatch, Gentek, and kill Alex and stop the infection. Later in the story, Dana Mercer assists James by finding key figures to track down Alex’s whereabouts. James also discovers that his daughter, Amaya Heller, is still alive and is in Blackwatch’s custody.
Towards the end of the game, the leader of Blackwatch, Douglas Rooks, lets James Heller have his daughter back, however, one of Alex’s henchmen captures Amaya and delivers her to Alex. The final mission/final boss is against Alex. After defeating Alex, James stops the infection and gets his daughter back.
Which Story Is Better?
In my personal opinion, the story of Prototype is better compared to Prototype 2 story. Prototype 2 had too many plot holes that will be addressed in the next few sections. Let me start with the big elephant in the room in Prototype 2 that a lot of fans (including me) didn’t like: the sudden change in characterization of Alex in Prototype 2.
Alex Sudden Change Into A Villain:
Like most fans, I didn’t like the fact that Alex went from an anti-hero to a villain. If you are unaware of the definition of an anti-hero, here is one provided from Wikipedia:
“An anti-hero (or anti-heroine) is the main character who lacks conventional heroic qualities and attributes such as idealism, courage, and morality. Although anti-heroes perform actions that are morally correct, it is not always for the right reasons, often acting primarily out of self-interest or in ways that defy ethnic codes.”
The definition of an anti-hero on Wikipedia. This is the link to the Wikipedia page: https://rb.gy/jiwvrk
You might’ve seen other anti-heroes in entertainment. I will list some of them from different forms of entertainment that you might be familiar with:
Comics:
- Batman
- Deadpool
- Spawn
- V from V for Vendetta
- Punisher
Anime/Manga:
- Vegeta from Dragon Ball
- Scar from Fullmetal Alchemist
- L Lawliet from Death Note
Video Games:
- Kratos from God Of War Series
- Dante from Devil May Cry Series
- Shadow The Hedgehog from the Sonic the Hedgehog series
- Wario and Waluigi from the Mario series
- Max Payne from the Max Payne
Including many others. Personally, anti-heroes are more intriguing compared to their hero or villain counterparts. They aren’t 100% heroes or villains and they alternate between the two sides. This is what Alex Mercer was in the first game. Making Alex into a villain RUINS his character.
To further the reason why it ruins his character, there are several arguments I have on why making him a full-on villain isn’t ideal. Let me start with a cutscene where Alex was ashamed of what the original Alex did. The way I see it (and so many other Prototype fans), the original Alex and the Viral Alex that you play in the game are two separate beings.
The original Alex did a terrible thing by releasing the virus on Manhattan. The Viral Alex is different from the original. When finding out the truth about Hope and the virus on Manhattan, the viral Alex stated in his own words that what the original Alex did was beyond forgiveness. Here is the clip where he says this (skip to 1:07):
Let me not forget to mention that at the end of Prototype, Alex saves New York from a nuke and survives it, therefore, he cared about Manhattan. He didn’t want Manhattan to be nuked like what happened back in Hope, Idaho. Here is the ending cutscene of Alex dropping the nuke and stopping it.
There is also another major plot-hole in Alex Mercer’s characterization that was pointed out by a Tumblr blog that I stumbled upon called Messy Space Spades that I will link here (https://bit.ly/36cMNwV, I will also use this blog as a future reference later in this review).
On bullet 14 on the list, why would Alex want to harm his sister?
In one of the missions of Prototype, Dana gets kidnapped by a Leader Hunter, a more powerful rendition of the hunters. In that mission, he chased after the Leader Hunter until Blackwatch intervened. Then in a couple of missions after this one (4 missions), Alex made it a top priority to get his sister back, fighting everything that got in his way.
To show this, I will leave a few clips showing the missions on what he had to do to get Dana back.
These few missions alone shows that he cares about his sister, so why the sudden change in Prototype 2? Dana Mercer was one of the only NPCs who helped Alex find his past (the other being Dr. Ragland, another ally that assisted Alex). And yes, I understand that they are tie-in comics on why Alex turned evil, but personally, it’s a petty reason why he turned into a villain.
Apparently, Alex turned evil after a woman betrayed him and tried to kill him. I feel that isn’t a good reason for him to say that ALL OF HUMANITY is terrible and should die out. Also, I’ve seen this trope many times in fiction. The trope that I’m talking about is misanthropy.
Misanthropes are characters who hate humanity. Because of their hatred for humans, they cause immoral acts towards humans (like murder as an example). I’m sorry, but I’ve seen PLENTY of villains like that in other entertainment. Here are some that I can name, but really, there are tons more out there:
- Joker from Batman
- Carnage from Spiderman
- Nyarlathotep from H.P. Lovecraft
- Ultron from The Avengers
These are just some examples of misanthropes in entertainment. The point that I’m trying to make that, while there are some threatening characters in this trope that are liked because they are good written villains, is that it is also overused and unoriginal in my view.
Another reason why changing Alex into a villain is bad is the fact is that he is pretty much a ripoff of Albert Wesker, one of the most popular villains in the Resident Evil franchise. Here are two factors between Albert Wesker and Alex Mercer in Prototype 2.
The Similarities Between Alex in Prototype 2 And Albert
- They both hate humans
- They both want to usher in a new world
What separated Alex from Albert is that he was an anti-hero while Albert was 100% villain. That is what made Alex unique by being an anti-hero. The last argument I would like to make about this point is about Blackwatch.
I don’t care how much Alex lost his faith in humanity, he wouldn’t stoop as low as Blackwatch. As I mentioned in the breaking down the story section of both games, Blackwatch is a very controversial organization that is responsible for horrible acts. Besides nuking Hope, Idaho, testing on humans, and almost succeeding in nuking Manhattan, here is a list of other unethical things Blackwatch has done in the second game:
- They kidnapped humans so Gentek can continue their experimentation on them. Many of these experiments have the infected tear the subjects apart.
- They send the marines on suicide missions for patrols that are unnecessary.
Other acts that Blackwatch did were told through Black-boxes, one of the collectibles you need to find throughout the game. The black-boxes revealed more horrible things Blackwatch did such as:
- Shooting an autistic boy just because he couldn’t answer if he was infected or not.
- Shooting a woman if she didn’t step away even though she was simply asking where her boyfriend is
- Colonel Rooks, the current leader of Blackwatch, threatened to discipline a soldier when the soldier saved a woman from being raped.
- Another recording from a black-box had an officer go off on another soldier when he accidentally shot an entire family, not because the action was unethical, but that the soldier was wasting ammo.
To sum it up, Blackwatch is terrible. I don’t believe Alex would stoop as low as them. I believe he should’ve stopped them. I feel like Prototype 2s story would be a whole lot better if this was the case. This is just one of the reasons why the first story is better than the second one. There are other plot holes in Prototype 2s story that I would like to talk about in this review.
Other Noticeable Plot-Holes In Prototype 2:
Besides the change of characterization of the first main protagonist, there are other plot holes in Prototype 2s story. These plot-holes are mentioned on the Tumblr blog Messy Space Spades blog. Here is a breakdown of the important plot-holes:
Making Amaya “The Mother Of The New World”:
In bullets 7 and 8, it mentioned the plot holes regarding Amaya Heller, James Heller’s daughter.
Messy Space Spades Blog
Let me start at the beginning of Prototype 2. During the beginning cutscene, Blackwatch were the ones who discovered James Heller’s wife and daughter’s body. After discovering the bodies, they confirmed that both are deceased. However, towards the end of the Green Zone, it turns out that Amaya Heller is still alive. This doesn’t make sense because Blackwatch THEMSELVES confirmed that Amaya died at the start of the game.
Amaya isn’t like Alex, where she died but was reconstructed cell by cell from the virus like Alex. If this was the scenario, then there would be no way for her to remember James Heller, but she does remember him. In fact, why would a young child such as her be “the mother of the new world?”
I don’t know the exact age of Amaya (and it doesn’t say on the wiki), but I’m going to guess that her age is between 11-12. First off, she is a child and she is WAY too young to be the mother of the new world. Secondly, what are the chances that she can survive the Blacklight virus? To become a Prototype like Alex or James, she would need a specific set of genes. It would be a VERY LOW chance of Amaya having those types of genes.
This is just one of the other major plot holes in Prototype 2s story. The next one regards with Whitelight.
The Whitelight Plot-Hole
On Pointer 9, it talks about Whitelight and the plot-hole on how Alex was able to taint it with his DNA
Messy Space Spades
On pointer 9, this pointer talks about Whitelight. Whitelight was supposed to be a cure for the Blacklight virus created by Gentek. However, unbeknownst to Gentek, Dr. Archer, one of Alex Mercer’s evolved, tainted Whitelight with his blood. Therefore, the Whitelight would have the opposite effect by infecting everyone who was exposed to it.
I believe you see the plot-hole in this: wouldn’t the Blacklight strain be killed if it was fused with Whitelight? The Whitelight was SPECIFICALLY MADE to eliminate the Blacklight virus and Alex, so it would destroy Alex’s DNA strand.
Unless Alex somehow was able to create a strand that withstands Whitelight (which I swear wasn’t mentioned ANYWHERE in Prototype 2s story), this is another plot hole in the story. The last one I would like to mention in this review is that deals with the former important Blackwatch members (General Randall and Specialist Cross).
The Previous Key Figures Of Blackwatch:
On the last pointer of the blog post, it talks about how it seems funny that the two important key figures of Blackwatch from the first game were never mentioned once during Prototype 2
Messy Space Spades
I find it a little strange that Blackwatch NEVER mentioned the two major figures of Blackwatch that were in Prototype. These two figures being Robert Cross and General Randall. General Randall was the previous leader of Blackwatch before Colonel Rooks took over and Robert Cross led a team of elite soldiers of Blackwatch that fought against Alex in a hive.
I feel that Blackwatch would at least mention these two figures since they were major figures of Blackwatch, but I guess not? These are just three plot holes in the story that I wanted to tell everyone about.
Of course, there are other plot holes in the story that the Tumblr blog said, so be sure to check out their blog and read through it. There are other posts they made regarding Prototype 2, so check those out as well. I just wanted to talk about the important plot holes in Prototype 2s story.
All in all, I feel that Prototypes story is better than Prototype 2. If Prototype 2 had a different structure and the story didn’t have too many plot holes, then I would like it a little more.
Overall Rating Of Both Stories:
Here is my honest rating of the stories for both games:
Prototypes Story:
Why This Rating?:
I loved everything about Prototype’s story. The background behind Hope, Idaho and Elizabeth Greene, and Alex’s past are all gripping. I also like the WOI, I thought it was a unique way to tell the story of Prototype.
Prototype 2s Story:
Why This Rating?:
If there weren’t so many plot holes in Prototype 2s story, then I might’ve given it a higher rating. Too many plot holes in stories ruin the narrative. Also, it would’ve been better if Alex wasn’t a villain, rather, it should’ve been Pariah (more about Pariah will be in the character section). There weren’t many WOI targets in the second game, but I wouldn’t say this is the biggest problem with the game.
Characters:
Now that I’ve gone over both stories and which story I liked the best, what about the characters? In this section, I will tell you about each major character or faction from the game and the voice actors provided by the graphics I’ve made, then I will tell you my thoughts on each character or faction.
Prototype:
Main Character:

Name: Alex Mercer
Occupation: Ex-Scientist, virologist, and geneticist
Their Role In-Game: Main Protagonist
Short-Bio: Alex Mercer is the main protagonist of Prototype. With no memories of his past, he uses his shapeshifting powers to find out what happened to him, his past, and the truth about the conspiracy. Once he finds out that the original Alex was responsible for the Blacklight outbreak in New York, the viral Alex, or his codename ZEUS, stops Blackwatch from nuking Manhattan and ultimately stops the virus.
Voice Actor:

Voice Actor: Barry Pepper
Date & Place Of Birth: April 4th, 1970 in Campbell River, Canada
Short Bio: Born on April 4th, 1970, Barry Pepper is a Canadian-American actor popular for his roles in hit movies like Saving Private Ryan and The Green Mile. He has also won movie awards like the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Actor in a Miniseries. He also did voice acting for two video games.
Other Entertainment Roles: Private Daniel Jackson from Saving Private Ryan, Dean Stanton in The Green Mile, and another video game character which is Corporal Dunn in Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
What Do I Think About This Character?
Let me answer this question short and sweet: I love Alex Mercer as a character. His powers are one of the reasons why I wanted Prototype and the Xbox. I also like the backstory of Alex Mercer and how he got his powers. In all forms of entertainment, he is definitely my favorite anti-hero of all time. Also, Barry Pepper did a fantastic job with voicing Alex. Barry Pepper’s voice captured the grittiness of Alex Mercer, especially since Alex is an anti-hero. Also, Alex wears a cool hood, which is something I like since I collect hoods myself and wear them frequently.
Alex’s Sister

Name: Dana Mercer
Occupation: Investigative Journalist
Their Role In-Game: Sister of the main protagonist who is also a helpful NPC who provides information for Alex and later for James Heller
Short Bio: Codenamed Athena, Dana assists Alex Mercer in finding out what is going on at Gentek and the CEO of the company, Raymond McMullen. She also helped Alex in finding out what happened to him. She reappears in Prototype 2, helping James Heller in bringing down Blackwatch, Gentek, and her brother.
Voice Actress

Voice Actress: Lake Bell
Date & Place Of Birth: March 24th, 1979 New York, New York
Short Bio: In her acting career, Lake Bell has been in many TV roles and films like Boston Legal, Surface, How To Make In America, among other television shows. She also provided the voices for characters in movies such as The Secret Life Of Pets, Million Dollar Arm, No Escape, etc. Other than being a wonderful actress, she is also a writer, a director, and a model.
Other Entertainment Roles: Annie Dwyer in No Escape, Poison Ivy in the Harley Quinn show, and Chloe in A Secret Life Of Pets
What I Think About This Character?
Besides Alex, I also love his sister. Without her, how can Alex ever found out about his past? Dana aided Alex by either finding key targets, finding another ally (Dr. Ragland), or finding out the truth behind Hope, Idaho, and Elizabeth Greene. She is also great in Prototype 2, but I will discuss a little more on what she does in the sequel.
Main Villain Of Prototype:

Name: Elizabeth Greene
Their Role In-Game: Main Villain, Test Subject
Short Bio: Captured by Blackwatch at Hope, Idaho at the young age of 19, Elizabeth Greene became infected with the Redlight virus. Ever since she became infected, her aging process stopped and she gained superhuman powers. Later in the game, she becomes the monstrous behemoth who became a boss codenamed MOTHER.
Voice Actress:

Voice Actress: Kari Wahlgren
Date & Place Of Birth: July 13th, 1977 in Hoisington, Kansas
Short Bio: One of the most popular voice actresses, Kari Wahlgren provided voices for characters in movies, TV shows, video games, and anime alike. Her first role was Haruko in the anime FLCL. Since her first role, she went to voice other anime characters.
Other Entertainment Roles: Tigress in Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, Jessica in Rick and Morty, and Kitana in the Mortal Kombat 11.
What I Think About This Character?
Personally, I like Elizabeth Greene and in a way she is sympathetic. For one, she was young when she was captured by Blackwatch/Gentek and she then became a test subject. Both Blackwatch and Gentek took everything away from her. And now since she was infected with the Redlight, she lost her humanity. The MOTHER boss was also a challenge, however, I don’t think it was much of a challenge compared to the final boss of the game, the supreme hunter.
Ally Turned Traitor:

Name: Karen Parker
Occupation: Ex-scientist, a virologist, and geneticist just like Alex
Their Role In-Game: Ex-girlfriend of Alex’s, was going to help Alex in stopping the virus until she betrayed him to Blackwatch.
Short-Bio: Alex Mercer’s ex-girlfriend prior to the outbreak, Karen Parker worked at Gentek along with Alex. She sets Alex on finding viral samples so she can study them, however, one of the missions sent Alex into a trap as she, along with Gentek, created a parasite that will affect Alex.
Voice Actress:

Name: Vanessa Marshall
Date & Place Of Birth: October 19th, 1969 New York
Short Bio: Starting her acting career after a successful performance she did herself, Vanessa has done much voice acting for different entertainment in movies, video games, and TV shows. Her most popular roles are in cartoons such as The Grim Adventures of Bill & Mandy, The Spectacular Spider-Man, Star Wars Rebels, Harley Quinn, etc.
Other Entertainment Roles: Irwin in The Grim Adventures Of Bill & Mandy, Mary Jane Watson in The Spectacular Spider-Man, Wonder Woman in Harley Quinn, and for a video game role (she has a lot) Samus Aran in Metroid Prime.
What I Think Of This Character?
Out of all of the main characters in Prototypes story, I didn’t care about Karen. She betrayed Alex to Blackwatch (though I will give her this, I do sort of believe she didn’t have a choice given that Blackwatch and Gentek captured her and interrogated her).
The Other Helpful NPC:

Name: Dr. Bradley Ragland
Occupation: Pathologist
Their Role In-Game: Another NPC that helps reverse the effects of the parasite that was destroying Alex and also gave Alex leads into finding Dana.
Short Bio: Located at St. Paul’s Hospital, Dr. Ragland used to work for Gentek as a gene therapist until 1993 when the Blacklight project was established, deciding to not work on the project. However, in 2008, two bodies that were infected with Blacklight were sent to the hospital where Dr. Ragland studied them. When Alex asked him for help, Dr. Ragland complied to assist him.

Name: Phil Lamarr
Date & Place Of Birth: January 24th, 1967 Los Angeles, California
Short Bio: Best known for his roles on MadTV and Marvin from Pulp Fiction, Phil Lamarr is one of the most influential actors of all time. His other popular roles are Samurai Jack, Mortal Kombat 11, Grey’s Anatomy, etc.
Other Entertainment Roles: In Samurai Jack, he plays the titular character of the same name, Kotal Khan in Mortal Kombat 11, and Steve Duncan in Grey’s Anatomy among other entertainment roles.
What Do I Think About This Character?
I liked Dr. Ragland as a character in Prototype. Besides Alex’s sister, Dr. Ragland was one of the only allies Alex had. Dr. Ragland aided Alex in dire times: the parasite that was eating Alex and in finding Dana’s whereabouts after she was taken by a leader hunter. There is, however, a big question I have regarding this character: where is Dr. Ragland? He didn’t appear in the second game at all. If Prototype 3 ever comes out, this is one question that I would like to be answered.
Blackwatch & Gentek

Name: General Peter Randall
Occupation: Leader of Blackwatch in the first game
Their Role In-Game: He leads the Blackwatch operations until his death
Short Bio: Peter Randall fought in Vietnam in 1968, leading soldiers through the battle. From there, he came to Hope, Idaho, where the town was slowly torn apart by the outbreak. He met Elizabeth Greene in a hospital, where he extracted her and her child. He eventually grew through the ranks and ultimately became the leader of Blackwatch and its operations. Since 2008, General Randall’s main focus was containing the virus and Alex.
Voice Actor:

Name: Gordon Clapp
Date & Place Of Birth: September 24th, 1948 North Conway, Conway, New Hampshire
Short Bio: Growing up at a ski resort located in New Hampshire, Gordon Clapp began his acting career when he cast in The Happy Time at a very young age. From there, he graduated from Williams College where he took classes in Drama. From there, he played characters from different TV shows and movies.
Other Entertainment Roles: Chaplain Orlovsky in Chicago Fire, Victor Kaufman in Grey’s Anatomy, and General Howlin Mad Smith in Flags Of Our Fathers
The Ally Who Was Wrongfully Killed:

Name: Specialist Robert Cross
Occupation: Elite Officer for Blackwatch
Their Role In-Game: Robert Cross fought Alex Mercer in the hive where Alex was gathering genetic material for Karen. He injected the parasite into Alex and then later in the game turned into an ally until he was killed and consumed by the supreme hunter
Short Bio: Starting as a lieutenant in the US Army, Cross was called by General Randall when his men failed to capture and contain Alex Mercer. Cross, along with the Wisemen Team, subdued Alex in a hive and fought. Cross was defeated, however, he was able to remind Alex of Penn Station, where the virus began. He was able to inject Alex with the parasite. Later in the game, Robert Cross gave information about Blackwatch’s past and the truth behind Alex and his powers. He aided Alex in the few final missions until it was revealed that he was consumed by the Supreme Hunter.
Voice Actor:

Name: Jeffrey Pierce
Date & Place Of Birth: December 13th, 1971 Denver, Colorado
Short Bio: Born in Denver and then raised in Arlington, Jeffrey began his career when touring the US. He eventually worked with the American Shakespeare Company, being part of the original cast. The American Shakespeare Company helped skyrocket Jeffreys acting career.
Other Entertainment Roles: Tommy in The Last Of US, Wyatt Monroe in Castle, and Sgt. Michael McMannis from NCIS.
General Randall’s Right Hand Man:

Name: Colonel Ian Taggart
Occupation: Commanding Officer for the USMC, or the United States Marine Corps
Their Role In-Game: He was the commanding officer for the Marine Corps who, under General Randalls order, locked down Manhattan, barricading bridges and establishing military bases around Manhattan
Short Bio: Since the outbreak in Manhattan, Taggarts views on the situation differ from General Randall’s, stating that containing a virus is too much for his men given the virus was spreading a vast area. Despite his disagreement, he followed General Randall’s orders.

Name: Richard McGonagle
Date & Place Of Birth: October 22, 1946, Boston, Massachusetts
Short Bio: Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Richard McGonagle is an actor who played in various TV shows, video games, and movies. Besides being an actor, he was also a producer. The three popular roles Richard has done are 500 Days Of Summer, Rules Of Engagement, and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
Other Entertainment Roles: Dr. Sachs on Rules Of Engagement, the Narrator in 500 Days Of Summer, and Victor Sullivan by Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
Gentek’s CEO:

Name: Raymond McMullen
Occupation: The founder and CEO of Gentek
Their Role In-Game: He is the founder of Gentek. He studied the Redlight virus and Elizabeth Greene then became obsessed with Alex Mercer
Short Bio: On November 1st, 1976, Raymond McMullen founded the Genetic Engineering company Gentek where he began studying non-coding sequences. At his request, Elizabeth Greene was transferred to the Gentek building where he studied the virus that was affecting her. Then in 1999, he recruited Alex, where Alex became the head researcher for the Blacklight project. When the outbreak began to spread, Alex became a new obsession for Raymond McMullen, wanting to subdue Alex so he can study him.
Voice Actor:

Name: Paul Guilfoyle
Date & Place Of Birth: April 28th, 1949 Boston, Massachusetts
Short Bio: Studying acting at the Actor’s Studio, Paul Guilfoyle is mostly popular for his role in the long-running crime show CSI (Crime Scene Investigation). Besides starring in CSI, he has been in movies as well.
Other Entertainment Roles: Captain Jim Brass in CSI, Wallace in Ransom, and the Head Chef in Mrs. Doubtfire
What Do I Think About These Characters?
The reason why I didn’t make a separate paragraph for each of these characters unlike the ones in the main character section is that there is only one character that I liked that was a part of Blackwatch. That character is Specialist Robert Cross.
It is a shame that he was killed and consumed by the Supreme Hunter. He was unique in a way compared to other members of Blackwatch. As I mentioned when comparing and contrasting the two stories of both Prototype and Prototype 2 when I was criticizing Alex’s change into a villain, Blackwatch did many inhumane things to civilians.
Robert Cross was the only member in Blackwatch that showed sympathy to innocent civilians and was the only enemy that went to Alex’s side. If Prototype 3 is going to be made, I hope they make a character like Robert Cross. As for the other characters, I don’t have any thoughts about them. However, I will say that the voice actors did well in their respected roles and I think it is cool that they got Paul Guilfoyle to voice one of the characters.
I watched CSI and it is one of my favorite shows of all time. Anyway, now that I got all of the main and Blackwatch/Gentek characters out of the way, what about the factions and the mysterious character Pariah? Don’t worry, I will talk about the two major factions (Blackwatch and the Infected) and Pariah in the next section.
The Two Major Factions And Pariah
In this section, I will tell my thoughts on what I think about Blackwatch and the different infected that show up in Prototype including Pariah. Let Me start with Blackwatch. There are two Blackwatch enemies in the game: the regular Blackwatch soldiers and the super-soldiers.
Blackwatch:
How Do I Feel About Blackwatch/How I Defeat Blackwatch?
I will say this regarding Blackwatch. They are one of the most brutal, ruthless military ops in any video game so far in any video game in my opinion. This is evidenced by what they did back in Hope, Idaho to what they try to do to Manhattan to what they do to innocent civilians, they certainly aren’t the good guys either.
Facing the soldiers is easy because they are regular humans, but the super-soldiers, however, are WAY MORE stronger. Super-soldiers are Blackwatch soldiers that are injected with a three-week-old strain of the Blacklight virus. Due to the virus, they become more durable and stronger, making them formidable enemies for both the hunters and Alex Mercer.
The super-soldiers were sort of a problem for me, but once you get the blade power it is easy to fight them. The only thing that I worried about was hitting the correct button when the prompt comes up. For anyone interested in playing Prototype, use the blade power plus the armor as this will make the super-soldiers take less damage off if you happen to hit the wrong button. But, if you do hit the button quick enough, this will cause extra damage to the super-soldiers.
Blackwatch appeared in Prototype 2, but I will talk a little more about them in Prototype 2 character breakdown. Now onto the infected that you face in Prototype.
Infected:
Hunters/Leader Hunters:
Leader Hunters:
Hydras
How Did I Fight The Infected?
Let me start with the hunters since they are the first powerful infected enemy you face in the game. When I first played Prototype, they were a little hard to defeat until I figured out what you had to do. They show up on the mission Behind The Glass where you meet Elizabeth for the first time. When you defeat the first hunter, you get the claw power.
While the claw power is cool, it is weak when facing the hunters. Here is advice for people who are interested in playing Prototype, it is advisable to get dive-roll before starting this mission as this will help you to avoid the hunter’s attacks. But, if you want to know a power that is useful against the hunters, it would be the blade.
You don’t get the blade power until the mission Biological Imperative. The blade power is great when fighting the hunters. This also applies to the leader hunters, however, you should also use the armor power as this will reduce the leader hunter’s attacks. You get the armor power on the same mission. You should also use the tendril barrage devastator, especially during the Things To Come mission when you have to defend the bloodtox pumper.
Now with the hydras, they first appear during the mission The Stolen Body once you killed all of the infected. Killing hydras are different from the hunters since they can throw debris (which the hunters/leader hunters can do as well) and can move their bodies at a 360-degree angle. I mostly tried to throw things at them (the only time you can throw things at them is if they have something in their mouth) as they can pick up things that you throw at them.
When throwing things at them, use the muscle-mass ability as this will kill them quicker. I also tried close combat with the hydras by using the tendril barrage devastator. So there is my advice on how to defeat each of these infected.
What Do I Think About The Infected Designwise?
Design-wise, however, I think they look cool, however, I think their appearances in the second game are better which I will show in the Prototype 2 character breakdown section. Now that I got the infected out of the way, let me now talk about one more character in Prototype that was a missed opportunity in the second game: Elizabeth Greene’s child codenamed PARIAH.
Pariah
How Do I Feel About PARIAH?
Me, along with many other Prototype fans, found PARIAH to be interesting and a huge missed opportunity for Prototype 2. For one, I feel like PARIAH should’ve been the villain of the game rather than Alex Mercer. Also, Prototype 2 should’ve explored more about PARIAH. In the second game, he is mentioned but he doesn’t show up in the game.
I’m really curious about how strong PARIAH is. According to McMullen, he said that PARIAH is the only one who can stop Alex. If that is true, how powerful is PARIAH considering that Alex is one of the strongest video game characters?
If Prototype 3 ever becomes a thing, I hope PARIAH is the main villain or maybe the main protagonist if Alex or James is not going to be (though I feel like it makes more sense if he was the villain). Anyway, this is my thoughts on all of the characters in Prototype.
I believe it is now time to go over the characters in Prototype 2 and my thoughts on each of them.
Prototype 2 Characters:
The Main Protagonist:

Name: James Heller
Occupation: Former Sergeant for the US Marines
Their Role In-Game: Main Protagonist who wants to stop Blackwatch, Gentek, and Alex Mercer
Short Bio: After the death of his family, James Heller becomes infected with the Blacklight virus. After finding out the truth behind the deaths of his family and the second outbreak, James is driven by vengeance and ultimately wants to stop Blackwatch, Gentek, and Alex Mercer by using powers similar to Alex.
Voice Actor:

Name: Cornell Womack
Date & Place Of Birth: N/A
Short Bio: Cornell Womack is an American actor who also is a songwriter. He has been in different movies such as The Happening, State Of Play, Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen, and of course James Heller in Prototype 2
Entertainment Roles: Construction Foreman in The Happening, Junior Detective #1 in State Of Play, and the FBI director in Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen
What Do I Think About This Character?
I know I might be in the small minority for this opinion in the Prototype fandom, but I don’t hate James Heller. If the story was written better, then I guarantee that James Heller would be a better character. Hell, I would say that all these characters in Prototype 2 would’ve been better if the story was a lot better.
Here is an idea of what I think Prototype 2 should’ve been: it should be that both Alex and James work together to thwart Blackwatch, Gentek, and the infection that was caused by PARIAH. From one cutscene in the first game, Raymond stated that if Alex and PARIAH ever met it would be extraordinarily bad. With this in mind, Alex would need someone who is equally stronger like him. This is where James comes in. From there, you can alternate between the two characters.
I feel it was something like this Prototype 2s story would be better. At the start of the game, it sort of make it seem like this was going to be the case until the end of the yellow zone when Father Guerra showed the CCTV footage of Alex starting the second outbreak.
I will also say that as much as I don’t much about the voice actor, he did a fantastic job voicing James Heller in Prototype 2. All in all, James Heller is not a bad character, he is just in a bad story.
Main Villain:

Name: Alex Mercer
Occupation: Ex-scientist for Gentek, virologist
Their Role In-Game: Was the protagonist of the Prototype who turned villain who wants to spread the virus
Short Bio: After traveling the world and seeing the worst of humanity, Alex made it his goal to spread the virus and usher in a new world. To do this, he wanted to replace humanity with evolved.
Voice Actor:

Name: Darryl Kurylo
Date & Place Of Birth: November 17th, 1965 East Lansing, Michigan
Short Bio: Darryl Kurylo is a voice actor for animated TV shows/movies, audiobooks, and many video games. He provided narration for different books like Curing Medicare, Standing Stones, Trombone Girl, among others.
Entertainment Roles: Most of his roles are video games where he provides additional voices for games like MySims: Kingdom, Titan Quest, Tony Hawk games (Project 8 and Proving Ground), etc.
What I Think About This Character?
Despite me hating what they did to Alex’s character in Prototype 2 as evidenced by my long discussion of it, I still like Alex in Prototype 2. Just like James Heller, if the story was better and PARIAH was the villain rather than Alex, then I feel like Alex’s character would develop A LOT from the first game.
I feel like I already talked about why I don’t like the fact that Alex went from a cool anti-hero to a generic villain, so I won’t tread it here.
Codename: Athena

Name: Dana Mercer
Occupation: Investigative Journalist
Their Role In-Game: Dana provides information for James about his daughter and her whereabouts.
Short Bio: Dana shows up in the second game. Much like she did the first game, she provides James with information about Blackwatch, Gentek, and her brother. She also leads a resistance located in the Yellow zone which she was codenamed Athena.

Name: Lindsay Ames
Date & Place Of Birth: N/A
Short Bio: Lindsay is a multi-talented actress who also is a writer, director, stand-up, live shows, and online content.
Entertainment Roles: Shana in The Vow, Poppy O’ Hare in Ever After High: Spring Unsprung, Sarah Holland in Beauty and The Beast
What I Think About This Character?
Dana reappears in Prototype 2 and, much like in the first game, she helps James Heller in finding his daughter. I feel the same way as I said in the first game, without her help, James Heller wouldn’t know how to get his daughter back. I believe her codename fits well with what she does in both games.
The Second Ally:

Name: Father Luis Guerra
Occupation: Priest
Their Role In-Game: Ally of James who gives information about Blackwatch and Gentek’s operations. He also leads the resistance in the Yellow zone
Short Bio: After learning about Blackwatch’s operations, Father Guerra joined with the other citizens and began a resistance. However, failing to stop them, he boarded himself up in his church. But, with James Heller’s help, both of them stop the operations.
Voice Actor:

Name: Ivan Basso
Place & Date Of Birth: N/A
Short Bio: Ivan Basso is an actor whose most popular roles are in movies. He is known in Zig Zag, Sister’s Keeper, and the TV series Pacific Blue.
Entertainment Roles: Officer Ryan in Pacific Blue, Thug #1 in Sister’s Keeper, and Javier in Zig Zag
How I Feel About This Character?
The last character for the main/supporting characters, I liked Father Guerra mostly because he was like Dr. Ragland of Prototype 2. He assisted James by giving him key targets of Blackwatch and was strongly against them. It is a shame that he died in Prototype 2.
This is it for the main characters or supporting characters, so I now believe it is time to go over the evolved of this game.
Evolved:
Before I go into the evolved of this game, I want to point out that I didn’t mention all of the evolved. I only went with ones that are important to the story. Also, I tried to find a clear image of the Evolved: Whipfist that I could use, but I wasn’t able to find an image, but essentially once you defeat this evolved, you get the whipfist power.
The Evolved:

Name: Sabrina Galloway
Occupation: CFO for Gentek
Their Role In-Game: Giving locations to James of other evolved until she betrayed him
Short Bio: Working for Gentek, Sabrina worked her way until she became CFO. She helped James by finding other evolved. Towards the end of the game, she betrays James and reveals that she was evolved, bringing his daughter to Alex Mercer. She was killed when Alex consumed her along with the other evolved.
Voice Actress:

Name: Melissa Disney
Date & Place Of Birth: November 20th, 1970
Short Bio: Melissa Disney is an actress and writer, who is mostly popular for voicing the main character in Nickelodeon’s show As Told By Ginger.
Entertainment Roles: Ginger Foutley in As Told By Ginger, Lucy in Hermie and Friends, and Guy’s Mother in The Croods: The New Age

Name: Dr. Anton Koenig
Occupation: Virologist at Gentek
Their Role In-Game: Much like Sabrina, he aided James Heller a little until he showed himself as an evolved
Short Bio: The first evolved you face in the game, Anton grew fascinated about James when he survived the infection. Later in the game, Anton assisted James, though this didn’t last long when Anton showed that he was one of Alex’s evolved.
Voice Actor:

Name: Robert Morse
Place & Date Of Birth: May 18th, 1931 Newton, Massachusetts
Short Bio: One of the most popular actors, Robert Morse, along with his brother, studied acting at Neighborhood Playhouse, From there, he started his acting career in the film The Proud and Profane.
Entertainment Roles: Jack Frost in Jack Frost, Casualty in The Proud And Profane, Bertram Cooper in Mad Men

Name: Dr. Karen Archer
Occupation: Virologist working for Gentek
Their Role In-Game: She worked with the White-light project where she will put Alex’s DNA until James consumed her
Short Bio: N/A (it’s the same as their role)
Keith Gallagher was a commander for Blackwatch who was in charge of distributing the white-light around Manhattan. He was revealed as being one of the evolved that James Heller eventually killed, granting him the blade power.
Dr. Harry Gutierrez was a scientist for Gentek. He assisted Karen Archer through the whitelight project and became an evolved. After James consumed him, he got a memory that told him about whitelight.
Evolved: Biobomb is one of Alex’s evolved who infiltrated Blackwatch by disguising himself as one of the soldiers. After James consumed him, he gained the bio-bomb, a new power that was introduced in Prototype 2.
What Do I Think Of The Evolved?
Unlike all of the other characters, I only found two characters and their voice actors, which is why the other ones don’t have the same format. Also, I want to talk about the evolved as a whole rather than separately.
In my opinion, I think the evolved are a wasted opportunity and are one-dimensional. The only things you know about them is that they either worked for Blackwatch or Gentek and that they are secretly working with Alex. I feel like there should be more to them than just that.
I feel like they would be a lot cooler if they worked with Alex and James if they were working together. Imagine what the game would be like if it was PARIAH and his infected army against Alex and James infected army (that being the evolved). The evolved could also be made by Blackwatch according to another Tumblr blog, but I think my idea is better (no offense).
Also, they weren’t that tough to beat even on hard mode. I understand that they aren’t as powerful as the Prototypes (Alex and James), but I expected a little challenge. All I did was use the hammerfist or the brawler devastator (particularly during hard mode).
That is all I have to say about the evolved, now I will go over the Blackwatch and minor characters. (PS: A little off-topic, but doesn’t the bio-bomb evolved look like Albert Wesker)?
BlackWatch/Minor Characters:

Name: Colonel Rooks
Occupation: Current leader of Blackwatch’s operations
Their Role In-Game: He is the current leader of Blackwatch who navigates Blackwatch into what they need to do in the three locations
Short Bio: After the death of General Randall, Colonel Rooks took over Blackwatch. He believed that Blackwatch was the last defense for biological attacks. Other than himself, he also has Clint Riley who helps him with the operations.
Voice Actor:

Name: Daniel Reardon
Date & Place Of Birth: N/A
Short Bio: Daniel Reardon is an actor and director of films. His most popular films include White Cargo, My Left Foot, and Dark Secrets
Entertainment Roles: Director of White Cargo, Tony in My Left Foot, and Drunk Man in Night Train
Name: Lt. Clint Riley
Occupation: The right-hand man for Colonel Rooks
Their Role In-Game: Clint Riley aids Colonel Rooks through Blackwatchs operations
Short Bio: Other than Colonel Rooks, Clint Riley participated in Blackwatch’s operations. One of these operations was Project: Orion, a supersoldier program. Later in the game, he sees James when Dr. Koenig was doing tests. After that ordeal, James eventually kills him and uses him as a disguise when talking to Colonel Rooks.
Voice Actor:

Name: David Forseth
Date & Place Of Birth: N/A
Short Bio: David Forseth is the voice actor for different video games like Titanfall, Saints Row IV, Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds, among others.
Entertainment Roles: Inatut in Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds, The Voices of Virtual Steelport in Saints Row IV, and James MacAllan in Titanfall
Blackwatch Enemies:
Minor Characters:
Voice Actress:

Name: Tara Lynne Barr
Date & Place Of Birth: October 2nd, 1993 Orange County, California
Short Bio: Tara’s character roles are tremendous, from playing a smart teen to playing a character who was part of Charles Manson’s cult, Tara became a popular actress. She started her career in the Hulu comedy series Casual.
Entertainment Roles: Laura Myers in Casual, Kat in The Darkness, and Haley in The Suite Life Of Zack & Cody
What I Feel About Blackwatch/Minor Characters?
Personally, I don’t care much about the Blackwatch characters. I will say, however, that Colonel Rooks is a little better than the previous leader only because he executed his soldiers and let James have his daughter back (until Sabrina took her), though that is not saying much. Like I mentioned in the plot holes of Prototype 2, I’m surprised they didn’t mention anything about the previous figures of Blackwatch (that being General Randall and Robert Cross).
The super-soldiers in this game are a lot bigger than from Prototype. There are also two types of super-soldiers: the phase one soldiers are like the ones you face in Prototype while the phase two soldiers are more stronger and agile. They can still grab you, but rather than hitting any of the four buttons on the Xbox or Playstation controller, you use the right stick to break free from their grip.
I mostly used the shield to block out their attacks. If you block their attacks on time, you have the ability to slam them on the ground. The last characters are the minor characters: Barnes Griffin and Amaya Heller.
I know Barnes Griffin isn’t important to Prototype 2s story, but I added him in this review because he was on a project about PARIAH. This kinda shows that the devs who made Prototype 2 didn’t completely forget about PARIAH. Also, this is the only time PARIAH is brought up.
It’s great that Amaya is still alive, however, I feel that this is a major plot hole in Prototype 2s story. At the beginning of the game, Blackwatch found her dead along with her mother and James Heller’s wife. To add to this, she wouldn’t remember her father if she died, but clearly she remembers her father.
Despite this plot hole, I hope she comes back if Prototype 3 comes out. Maybe she could be like Dana. The last characters I want to talk about is the infected.
The Infected:
How Do I Feel About The Infected In Prototype 2?
I don’t know if this is just me, but I like the infected looks more than the first one. I like how the hunters have spikes on their backs, it makes them look a little more threatening. Hydra’s return as well, but in this game, they can use their tongues to grab you. You can dodge this attack by pressing the button the prompt tells you.
The Juggernauts are a new form of infected and their a little harder to defeat due to having shields. To defeat them, I used the tendril power to kill them. They are also slow compared to the other infected, so consume if you need to! You should also use the tendril power when fighting the hunters.
There are also flyers, infected pigeons that you can see throughout the game. I tried to get a GIF of them, but I believe they’re only a threat on the last battle of the game. I would like to also add what their design was going to look like and how badass it looks. Here is a picture of what the flyers were going to look like:

Don’t they look cool? They kind of remind me of a mythical creature from Philippine folklore known as the manananggal, a creature that splits its body in half that has wings and fangs, giving it a vampire-esque look.

If Prototype 3 becomes a game, I hope this design of the flyers comes back, or make them a new infected in the game. So that is my feelings towards each of the characters. Now I will give an overall rating for the characters.
Overall Rating For The Characters:
Prototype:
Alex Mercer:
I love Alex as a protagonist because of several reasons. These reasons include:
- He is one of the best anti-heroes in any video game in my opinion
- One of the major factors on why I wanted to play Prototype is his powers (which I will go over in another section)
- His backstory is interesting as well.
- I like his design as well. I love any character that wears hoods
Those are the main reasons why I give Alex Mercer a five out of five-star rating.
Side Characters:
Overall
In the first game, there are a few characters that I don’t care about, but there are other characters that I liked besides Alex like Dana, Dr. Ragland, and Robert Cross.
Prototype 2:
James Heller
I give James three stars because I don’t completely hate him. As I mentioned previously, I don’t think he would be a bad character if the story was better. He has powers similar to Alex, but some are different that I liked.
Side Characters:
I gave the same rating to the side characters in the second game. There are a few that I like while there are others that I don’t care about.
Evolved:
I gave the evolved two stars because to me they are wasted potential. Much like James, if the evolved worked alongside both Alex and James by taking down PARIAH, then I feel that they would have a little more development and purpose.
Those are the overall ratings I will give for the characters. Now I should go over the gameplay. For the gameplay section, I will go over the powers, bosses, achievements, WOI (Web of Intrigue), among other things.
Gameplay
I will start discussing the powers first since this is one of the major aspects of why I got this game and the Xbox overall. Both Alex Mercer and James Heller are shapeshifters, a superpower where the user changes their body. Another popular example of a shapeshifter is werewolves.
Their powers are similar to each other, but they are a few different abilities they have that separate them. I will start with showing Alex Mercer’s powers and what each is good for, then I will tell you what my favorite powers are.
Alex Mercer’s Powers
Offense Powers:
These are all the offense powers that Alex can use. Each of these powers has different uses that will help you progress through the game. So, it is important to get all of these powers, either through upgrades or by playing through the story. Here is what each power does:
- Claws: The first power that you get in the game. You get claws when you consume a hunter when you are on the mission Behind The Glass. From there, there are about four upgrades you can get for this power. I don’t use this power much, but I do like the ground-spike ability. This power is useful towards human-sized enemies, but not so much against larger infected like the hunters/leader hunters, hydras, etc.
- Muscle-mass: This is a power that you can get after you complete the mission A New Order. This power is exclusive only to Alex. Much like claws, I don’t use it that much, however, it is crucial to have this power fully upgraded before you fight the final boss. This power also increases all of Alex’s abilities including devastators.
- Hammerfists: Hammerfists is another power that Alex has at his disposal. If you need a power that takes care of tanks, hammerfists are the way to go. This power easily destroys tanks (the other being the blade power). They can also be used against hunters/leader hunters.
- Whipfist: The whipfist is a great power to have when you need to take out or hijack helicopters, UAVs, or enemies that are far away from you. After you get the whipfist, there are two upgrades that you can get: the longshot grab which can be used for distant enemies, and the sweeper, which wipes out any enemy close by going a full 360.
- Blade: The last offense power that Alex has is the blade. The blade becomes available after you complete the mission Biological Imperative along with the armor. There are three upgrades for the blade: blade air slice, blade frenzy, and blade sprint frenzy. Like the hammerfist, the blade can take out tanks, especially when you have the blade air slice. The blade power can also work when fighting against hunters.
My Favorite Powers
Each of the powers has its strengths and weaknesses, but there are three in particular that are my favorite. These powers are the whipfist, blade, and claws. I like the blade because it looks cool with the armor and it is effective against the toughest infected (that being hunters) or the super-soldiers. It is also satisfying when using the blade against the tanks, especially the air slice. The whipfist is the same, but rather than the infected, it helps with taking out strike teams. It is also fun to use when you want to skyjack a helicopter.
I also love the claw power only because of the ground-spike upgrade. Other than the offense powers, Alex Mercer also has defense powers that protect him from oncoming attacks. These two defense powers are the shield and armor. He also has sensor powers like thermal and infected vision.
Defense Powers
Sensory Powers
- Shield power: The shield is a defensive power that blocks any on-coming projectiles from hitting Alex. Unlike the armor, Alex’s speed would be unaffected. However, if the shield gets hit too much, then it needs to recuperate before being used again.
- Armor power: The second defensive power Alex utilizes is the armor power. While the armor prevents Alex’s health from deteriorating, it limits his speed and the ability to glide. You get the armor power on the same mission where you get the blade (Biological Imperative).
- Thermal Vision: One of the two sensory powers Alex can use. Thermal vision cakes the surrounding area in blue and helps the player in finding targets like Blackwatch soldiers, police, or civilians. If you need to see through debris, smoke, or bloodtox, then you should use thermal vision.
- Infected Vision: Like thermal vision, infected vision highlights individuals that are infected with the virus. You get this power when you are doing the mission The First Monster, where Alex needs to consume targets that tap into the hivemind.
My Favorite Defensive Power
I love the armor more than the shield for a few reasons. First, it looks cool with the powers, especially with the blade. Second, it doesn’t break easily compared to the shield. Third and last, it makes Alex take less damage from bigger foes like the super-soldiers or hunters.
However, it is fun to equip the shield when there is a street full of civilians and you plow them with the shield. The last powers I want to talk about that Alex has are the large area attacks, also known as the devastators and the consume/disguise.
Devastators
(There is one devastator that Alex has called the critical pain devastator, but I didn’t add it here because I hardly use it and I don’t think many players use it as much as the other two devastators).
Consume/Disguise
My Favorite Devastator
My favorite devastator is the ground-spike graveyard devastator because I like the way it looks with spikes coming out of the ground. That is not to say that I didn’t use the tendril barrage devastator. I used this devastator for a few missions like Men Like Gods and to get the achievement Trail Of Corpses, where you have to kill 53,596 infected. As for the consume/disguise, Alex can consume any human such as the military, civilians, or the hunters to get health back.
When Alex consumes any military or civilian, he can disguise as them as shown in the GIFs. I think this is an effective and unique way for the military to not notice you. You also need to use consume for the WOI. Alex also needs critical mass to execute the two devastators. As you upgrade the critical mass, you can do more than one devastator.
James Heller almost has the same powers as Alex, but there are a few that is exclusive to James.
Prototype 2 Powers
Basic Powers:
Sensory/Defense Powers
Devastators
How Do I Feel About These New Powers?
Another positive thing I will give Prototype 2 is the tendril power. I prefer the tendril power to the muscle-mass because it is more efficient to use against the infected. I use tendril power for the brawlers and the juggernauts. So, I do love the tendril power.
There is also the bio-bomb power (which I don’t have a GIF for) that I used to take out the field ops. As long as no one is watching your target, you can give them a biobomb. This then leads up to James Heller’s sensory power: hunting.
The hunting ability replaces the thermal and infected vision from the first game. With the hunting ability, James can find lead targets for missions or BLACKNET. How the hunting ability works is that James would send out a pulse that turns the area red. When the pulse comes back quicker, it means that you are close to the target.
It is best to use the hunting ability on higher levels since most targets are below. You can also upgrade it so it can have a larger range. Unlike the first game, I use James sensory power a little more, but it is mostly for BLACKNET missions.
The last thing is the devastators. I don’t know if I’m the only person who thought that James barrage’s devastator is less effective than Alex. It doesn’t seem like it lasts as long as Alex or does much. As for the pack leader devastator, I do love the concept of it where you can have the infected fight on your side. However, I hardly ever use this devastator during the game except during hard mode when facing the evolved.
Other than that, James Heller’s powers are pretty much the same. The only difference is the upgrades. For example, for the claw power, you can get a pounce ability that makes you jump on your target. As in the first game, there are a lot of upgrades you can get, which is a positive for both games.
My Overall Rating For Alex/James Powers
Alex’s Powers:
I love Alex’s powers, especially the blade, claws, and whipfist. I also love the devastators that he as well, they are badass. There is one power I don’t use as much which is the muscle-mass, but I still like it for certain missions. Alex is proof that shapeshifting powers is the best.
James Powers
I love both the tendril power and the bio-bomb power. I prefer the tendril power a lot more than the muscle-mass and the bio-bomb is useful when you need a distraction or need to take out field ops. I only use the hunting ability for BLACKNET missions. When I first used it, it took some time to get used to, but after watching videos, I understand how to use it now.
I also prefer James shield over Alex because it doesn’t need to heal to be used again. His shield can also be used on both of his arms rather than just one.
I took a star off because of the devastators. As I mentioned previously, I like the concept of having infected fighting on your side, but I hardly use it. His other devastator doesn’t seem to do much damage or isn’t as cinematic as Alex.
The next part of the gameplay is the bosses, which will be the next section.
Prototype Bosses
Which Boss Is More Threatening?
There are three major bosses that you face in Prototype. The first boss is Specialist Cross where you fight him on the mission Errand Boy. To defeat him, I used the whipfist power. It is also crucial to not hit him when he has his stun baton ready. During the battle, he shouts that he is reloading. This is the perfect time to hit him. Robert Cross wasn’t that hard of a boss to me compared to the other two. The next boss, MOTHER, is fought on the mission On Instinct, while the Supreme Hunter is fought twice on two missions titled Children Of Blacklight and the last mission One Thousand Suns. These bosses might seem intimidating, however, there are several strategies to follow when killing them.
Let me start with the MOTHER boss. The main strategy I used was with the whipfist power. The strategy is that you move around in a circle from MOTHER while hitting her three tendrils. Then if I need health, I consume the nearby infected. There are other strategies that players can follow like the Tank strategy, hammerfist strategy, etc. If you want to know more about these strategies, here is a link to the MOTHER boss page on the Prototype wiki (https://bit.ly/3xVfoTp).
Personally, I didn’t find Elizabeth Greene/MOTHER boss to be too hard, just long. I’ve avoided her devastators and stayed on the buildings, so I hardly died from this boss. The other one, on the other hand, was a little more tricky, especially the last mission. That boss is the Supreme Hunter.
On the Children of Blacklight mission, you want to keep your distance away from the Supreme Hunter. It is also crucial to get any upgrades for movement. So, much like the MOTHER boss, I used the whipfist to hit the Supreme Hunter. After you get half of its health down, tanks will appear. Hijack in a tank and target the Supreme Hunter. Repeat this process until he is down.
Now on the last mission ONE THOUSAND SUNS, the same strategy applies that you should keep your distance, however, you should completely upgrade your muscle-mass and keep throwing things at the Supreme Hunter until he is down. On the first battle, it wasn’t too hard compared to the second battle. I believe the main reason is that you’re going to be on a time limit on the second battle. If you don’t kill the boss before the time runs out, New York gets nuked.
So, make sure you continuously target the Supreme Hunter. The military are also on board and will target the Supreme Hunter (for the most part).
Which Boss Is Tougher?
The Supreme Hunter is the hardest boss out of the two in my opinion because he seems to be stronger and there is a time limit. I do like both of these boss fights, however. Now let me get over the bosses you face in PT2.
Prototype 2 Bosses:
Which Boss Was Tougher?
In PT2, there are two major bosses: Goliath and Alex Mercer. The Goliath shows up during the mission Fall From Grace, which is the third to last mission in Green Zone. Because of its immense size, you need to dismember its body parts. You start with hitting its right leg, then its right arm, then lastly its head. To defeat the goliath, you can either do close-range attacks or long-range attacks like throwing objects.
I killed the goliath by using close-range attack with the blade. However, it is advised to be careful when doing close-range attacks as the goliath can do damage even with its leg and arm detached. This boss was a little challenging at first, but once I understood what to do, it was simple.
But what about Alex Mercer? You face Alex on the last mission titled Murder Your Maker. There are three stages in total. On the first stage, Alex will use the blade, so you need something that will be quick and simple. The powers you should use are claws and hammerfists. Then on the second stage, Alex will use more ranged attacks, so make sure to dodge them. You can also stun Alex when using the shield when he is about to attack you. The best powers to use during this stage is the blade and whipfist.
On the third stage, Alex will use all the powers and will call out the flyers at the beginning of the battle. When the flyers get close enough, you will need to do a devastator to kill them. For this last battle, you should use the whipfist while keeping your distance.
When you get Alex down, you are now at the stage where you consume him. Follow the button prompts that come up to consume him. I followed this strategy to defeat Alex.
To be honest, I was kinda disappointed in the final boss fight. It seemed like Alex didn’t use all of his powers like a devastator. I found it to be weird because Alex didn’t seem too powerful during this boss fight and to me, he is one of the most powerful video game characters in my opinion.
Which Game Had The Better Bosses?
I say that Prototype had the better bosses. Both MOTHER and Supreme Hunter were hard bosses compared to the goliath and Alex.
WOI (Web Of Intrigue)
What Is The WOI?
Throughout the game, Alex can consume certain targets that tell the backstory of what happened to Alex and Hope, Idaho. These targets typically show up on the map when you explore the different areas of Manhattan. Some targets are mandatory (meaning you need to consume them to continue the mission) or optional. There are about 131 targets for Alex to consume and once you kill all the targets, you will get an achievement titled Web Of Knowledge.
You can view the WOI memories in the main menu. James also consumes WOI targets, but unlike Alex, there aren’t many targets and James can only remember targets that are associated with the BLACKNET missions.
I wanted to put this on my review because I thought it was a unique way to tell the backstory behind what happened to Hope, Idaho/Elizabeth Greene, and Alex. I never played a video game with that element. As I said before, James Heller also has WOI targets, but most of them are from the BLACKNET missions, therefore it’s not as vast as Alex.
The next section will be about the achievements of both games.
Achievements
The semi-final gameplay thing I want to talk about is the achievements. I will first show achievements for both Prototype and Prototype 2, then I will give advice on how to get some of these achievements, and last I will tell you the hardest and easiest achievements to obtain.
As you can see, Prototype has 40 achievements while Prototype 2 has 43 achievements. Some achievements are story-related so those cannot be missed. The story achievements from both Prototype and Prototype 2 goes as follows:
For Prototype:
- Crossing T: This unlocks when you kill the hunters
- Errand Boy: This unlocks after you defeat Specialist Cross
- Children Of Blacklight: This unlocks after you defeat the Supreme Hunter on the first battle
- On Instinct: This unlocks after you kill Elizabeth Greene and finish the MOTHER boss
- One Thousand Suns: This is the last achievement that is story-wise. You unlock this achievement after you defeat the Supreme Hunter again on the last mission.
For Prototype 2:
- I Want Some More: This unlocks when you complete the first mission of the game Resurrection
- It’s An Epidemic: This unlocks when you complete the mission Meet Your Maker
- Religious Experience: This unlocks when you meet Father Guerra for the first time.
- The Mad Scientist: This unlocks when you complete the mission Natural Selection
- Something To Live For: This unlocks when you complete the mission Fall From Grace
- What A Bitch: This unlocks when you complete the mission A Labor Of Love.
- Murder Your Maker: This unlocks when you kill Alex and complete the game
Those are all the story achievements. To get these achievements, all you need to do is to play through the story. On the other hand, there are other achievements that you can get. I will give advice to some of the achievements:
Prototype:
- Trail Of Corpses: For this achievement, you have to kill 53,596 infected. Since you have a big number of infected to kill, it is best to wait until you get to the end of the game where the infected take over most of Manhattan. From there, fill your health up and if you have all of the upgrades for the critical mass, you should be able to do three devastators. Consume the infected until your health bar is full and repeat. You can keep track of the number of infected you killed by going onto the menu.
- Speed Bumps: This achievement is where you have to run over 500 characters in one tank. You can’t run over any military or infected, so it is best to do this achievement early in the game. I did this achievement when I was doing the mission The Wheels of Chance, where you transfer Karen Parker to a different apartment. Before you drop her to the apartment, run over pedestrians until this achievement unlocks.
- Return Fire: This achievement requires you to catch an object that is thrown by a hydra then throw it back at them. I did this achievement on the mission The World Set Free, where you deploy the bloodtox blower to Times Square. I would say when you’re halfway to the destination, the hydras will start to appear. All you need to do is throw an object back when a hydra throws it at you.
- The Butcher: To unlock this achievement, you need to kill 50 characters in 5 seconds. There are different ways to get this achievement, but the way I did it was by using a tank. Much like the speed bumps achievement, it is best to do this while on the Wheels of Chance mission. You should have rocket launchers that you can shoot at people.
- Au: This is the last achievement I will give advice on. To me, this is one of the hardest achievements to get because you need to get gold in all events. To do this, you will need to get all upgrades. Once you get gold in all events, you can now try to get platinum (which you also get an achievement for).
PT2 Achievement Advice
- Icarus: For this achievement, you will need to reach the highest point. To do this, you will have to unlock the red zone. You will have to go to the coordinates 717, 216 and then climb to the top.
- Strike, You’re Out: This achievement requires you to destroy a strike team in 15 secs. or less. I got this achievement by using a tank. Start by activating a strike team. Once a strike team is called, take off a missile launcher and fire at the helis. You should be able to get it. It is also best to do this achievement in the Yellow zone.
- The Floor Is Lava: Getting this achievement is simple as you can do it anytime. Personally, I did it when I had all of the movement upgrades. You need to travel half a mile without touching roofs or floors. I did this achievement in the red zone.
That is my personal advice on how I got these specific achievements. There are other strategies that you can follow, so look elsewhere if these strategies are not working for you. The last thing about achievements that I want to talk about is what were the easiest/hardest achievements to get and which game is easier to get all achievements.
Which Game Had The Easiest Achievements To Obtain?
One of the benefits I will give Prototype 2 is that the achievements are easy to get compared to Prototype. Most of the achievements in Prototype 2 are mostly using your powers and killing a certain number of targets (Prototype has achievements like this too). I think it is also great that you don’t have to get gold in all events unlike the first game (which is why it is hard to get a 100% completion on Prototype).
With that being said, here are the easiest and hardest achievements to obtain from both games in my personal view:
Easiest Achievement (Prototype)
“Any achievement that has you use a power or vehicle. These achievements include Gunning, Clean Up, It’s Him!, Infiltrator, etc.
The easiest achievements to get according to me
Hardest Achievement (Prototype)
“Definitely the Au achievement is the hardest. Some events it is hard to get gold. However, I eventually got this achievement on my second Xbox account and planning on doing it on my main account, so it is possible to get it.”
The hardest achievement to get in Prototype according to me
Prototype 2
Easiest Achievement (Prototype 2)
“I believe it is the same as Prototype, achievements like Hijack Be Nimble, One by One, Road Rage, etc. I also think finding the collectibles are easier in Prototype 2, but more on this later in the next section.”
The easiest achievement according to me.
Hardest Achievement (Prototype 2)
“To be honest, I don’t know of any hard achievements in Prototype 2 except Master Prototype where you have to beat the game on hard mode. For some reason, the final boss was a little bit of a problem, but I did it. Other than that, Prototype 2s achievements are easy.”
The “hardest” achievement according to me.
The last gameplay mechanic I want to talk about is the events/collectibles in Prototype and Prototype 2.
Events/Collectibles
The last important aspect of both Prototype and Prototype 2 that makes it fun is the events or collectibles that you can find around Manhattan. Prototype has different events around Manhattan that you can play. The events you can play are:
- Kill Events: You have to kill a certain amount of infected or military before the time runs out.
- War Events: You are assigned either on the infected or military side. You have to kill the opposing team within a certain time limit. If you die, take too long, or lose, you will not receive a medal.
- Glide Events: Using the glide ability, you have to land in the target as close as you can get.
- Movement Events: The last event is the movement event, where you have to get all of the green orbs fast within a time limit. You would also need other movement abilities like airdash and wall running.
- Military Consume Events: The military consume events are events that are activated when you consume the marked target. When you consume the target, there are three different things the event will instruct you to do: web targets, these are targets that are part of the WOI; scientist hunt, where you will need to go to the scientist and consume them. They are defended by Blackwatch soldiers; and base infiltration, where you will need to go into a military base. Each base has targets for you to consume; the last thing is base destruction, where you have to destroy a military base before the time runs out.
- Infected Events: Around Manhattan, you will see an infected that you will need to consume. When you consume this infected, you will activate the event where you will need to destroy a marked hive before time runs out.
These events help you get EP that you can use to get upgrades for your existing powers or new powers. There are three stages for the kill, war, glide, and movement events: bronze, silver, and gold. If you get gold in an event, you get more EP. To get gold in all events, you will need to get all available upgrades.
My personal favorites are Kill, War, and Glide events. For the glide events, they are easy to do in my opinion (at least most of the time). As for the war and kill events, they are fun to do and much like the glide events, easy to get gold on. My personal favorite consume event is ones with the military, specifically the base infiltration.
The reason why I like the base infiltration is that once you consume the targets, you can kill the rest of the military for extra EP. Besides the events, there are also collectibles around Manhattan: hints and landmarks. Hints are purple orbs while the landmarks are blue orbs. In total, there are 50 hint orbs while there are 200 landmark orbs. Once you find all of these orbs, you will unlock two achievements: Polymath for hint collectibles and Streetwise for landmark collectibles.
As of right now, I was able to get all the hint collectibles but still working on finding the landmark collectibles. There are sources you can use to find all of these hints and landmarks like videos on Youtube or the official Prima guide which I will link below. Prototype 2 also has events/collectibles, but they are a little different from the ones collected in Prototype.
Prototype 2 Events/Collectibles
Prototype 2 also has events and collectibles to get/do, however, it should be noted that there is no achievement for getting gold/platinum in all events unlike the first game. The events presented in Prototype 2 are part of Radnet, an online hub that lets players upgrade James Heller’s powers and other rewards once they do all events. Some events are challenges that you can do in-game rather than doing a particular event.
There are about five sets in total for players to do. I’ve done most of the events or challenges, but I don’t remember much about them. I think my favorite events are the incineration or the chopper ones. Unlike Prototype, Prototype 2s collectibles are easier to collect because when you are close to one, a meter will appear or it will warn you when a lair or field ops are close by.
There are three types of collectibles that I will go over right here:
- Blackboxes: These are audio recordings of deceased Blackwatch personnel that you can find scattered all over Manhattan. There are 45 black-boxes in total. Each zone has several blackboxes: 14 in the Green Zone, 13 in the Yellow Zone, and 18 in the Red Zone.
- Field Ops: Field Ops are scientist that are studying infected while being guarded by Blackwatch soldiers. There are multiple ways to kill the field ops, but the way I killed them, for the most part, is by giving a soldier a bio-bomb.
- Lairs: The last collectible for Prototype 2 is lairs. These are the breeding grounds for the infected. James can destroy infected pustules and kill targeted infected for DNA or upgrades. Blackwatch and evolved can be down in this area as well.
The best thing about each of these collectibles is that they are easy to find. Plus, you can also keep track of the number of lairs/field ops/black-boxes by mousing over the areas. Also when you play Prototype 2, you will notice rivulets on the map which will give you the direction of where you need to go.
That is all I need to say about the gameplay. In conclusion, the gameplay for both of these games are staggering, making both of these games replayable. With all of the gameplay out of the way, there are some other things I want to go over.
Redeeming Qualities Of Prototype 2:
Despite the lack of character development and the story of Prototype 2, there are some benefits that I think Prototype 2 has over Prototype:
- As stated before, I don’t think James Heller is that bad, he just needed a better story. The same could be said about the other characters as well.
- The graphics of Prototype 2 is a vast improvement over Prototypes (granted, Prototype came out in 2009).
- James Heller’s tendril ability is better than the muscle-mass in my opinion. I would also say that his shield is an improvement as well.
- Getting the achievements in Prototype 2 is easier compared to Prototype. This is perfect for anyone who likes to get a 100% completion on a game.
- This is for both Prototype and Prototype 2. I love the fact that you can do New Game+ with all the upgrades you have.
- Prototype 2 has more funny moments in it compared to the first game (on the contrary though, Prototype is a serious story, so I wouldn’t expect it to have funny moments). My favorite funny moments would have to be James with the computer and some of the things the Blackwatch operatives say. Here are two clips from Youtube of what I’m talking about.
- I like the look of the infected in Prototype 2 than in Prototype.
Downsides Of Prototype
As much as I love Prototype, there are some downsides of the game that I should mention.
- As I stated in pointer two, the graphics of Prototype are a little outdated
- The AI of Blackwatch or the Marines is a little broken
- Sometimes locking on targets can be hard to do
These are redeeming qualities I give to Prototype 2. There are other small things I want to talk about in this review.
Other Small Things
These are other small things I want to tell you in this review before I talk about the questions for Prototype 3. These are small things that slightly bugged me, but don’t affect the rating of the games.
- I prefer Barry Pepper’s voice acting compared to Darryl Kurylo (not saying that Darryl is a bad voice actor, I’m sure he is a good actor in other entertainment).
- I think the designs of Blackwatch from the first game are a little better than the second game. To me, there were too futuristic looking in Prototype 2.
- I also think the map was superior in Prototype when Manhattan wasn’t broken down into three sections. You can freely explore it without having to get through the missions to get into the next section.
- I do like the black and white cutscenes from the second game. I like the Sin City style of it.
Questions If Prototype 3 Is Going To Be Made
The last section before I conclude this long review is the questions I have regarding the series. If there ever is going to be a third entry in this series, then I have a few questions that I hope will be answered in the Prototype 3 story. I think the top question I have, including other Prototype fans, is about PARIAH.
- The biggest question for Prototype 3 is the mystery behind PARIAH. Who is he and is he going to be the main villain of Prototype 3?
Other than PARIAH, there are other questions I have surrounding the series which include:
- Is Alex Mercer still alive? If you get the achievement Murder Your Maker, you notice that there is a question mark at the end. Plus, if we are going by the ending from Prototype, Alex can regenerate if anything organic touches him. James ripped his arms off, so it could be possible that Alex could still be alive.
- Speaking of theories of characters being alive, what about the Supreme Hunter? If the Supreme Hunter is like Alex and can regenerate, then it could be possible that it is still alive since Alex just decapitated it?
- What happened to Dr. Ragland? As I mentioned previously, he was one of the only allies Alex had that didn’t betray him. He didn’t show up in Prototype 2.
- What is the fate of Blackwatch/Gentek? If Prototype 3 is ever going to be made, I imagine they will come back stronger.
- This is a question regarding the comics. Is Steve the father of PARIAH? According to the wiki, Steve had an intimate relationship with Elizabeth. If so, what happened to him?
- James Heller only killed the infected in the red zone. Does that mean that there is still infected in the Yellow zone? He only used his devastator in the red zone.
- Is it possible that there are still evolved around? According to the Prototype wiki, there are 38 evolved in total. I don’t believe that we faced all of the evolved in Prototype 2, so could be more roaming Manhattan?
- The last question I have regards with the original writer of Prototype. If I haven’t mentioned this, Dennis Detwiller was the writer for Prototype’s story. He left Radical Entertainment before Prototype 2, therefore, he didn’t work on the comics or Prototype 2s story. With that being said, my question is what does he think about Prototype 2? Did he like what they did with his character?
Those are the only questions I have. I do want a Prototype 3 due to the lore behind the game and the fact that this game was the first IP of Radical Entertainment, it is a pretty good one. On the other hand, there is a downside I have if Prototype 3 is going to be made.
With recent gaming, there has been controversy surrounding microtransactions and loot boxes, something that a lot of gamers are against. If they make Prototype 3, I feel like they would put in these shady monetizations in the game rather than having things that made it fun (events, WOI, Base Inflitration/Destroying bases, hives, etc). I feel like that might ruin the series. So, I kinda want a Prototype 3 and kinda don’t only because of that reason.
Conclusion
All in all, I think Prototype has the best story and characters while Prototype 2 has the best gameplay. I don’t think Prototype 2 is the worst game, however, the story and characters could’ve been a whole lot more if PARIAH was the villain rather than Alex Mercer.
However, I do suggest both Prototype and Prototype 2 to anyone who likes the following things:
- If you want to play as an overpowered badass throughout the game.
- If you love open world/sandbox games
- If you love games based around viral infections like me.
- If you like chaotic gameplay
I will provide the Amazon links for both Prototype games and the Biohazard Bundle (though I suggest you buy these games separately). I will also give the links to both of the Prima/strategy guides for both games. You can find both games on Amazon while the Prima guides for Prototype can be found on Amazon while Prototype 2 Prima guide can be found on eBay. The Prima guide goes over all missions, powers, achievements, events and how to do them, and concept art and bios of each character.

With that being said, I highly suggest Prototype and Prototype 2 for these reasons. That is it for my review. Thanks for anyone who stick around to read this review and I hope this encourage anyone who read it to play the Prototype series. Show the game love and support by playing it. Thanks for reading my first video game review as well. I hope to do more. Please follow my blog if you are interested in more content from me. It means a lot!
Game Tips:
Prototype Game Tips:
Fighting Blackwatch/Infected
- The blade power is good for fighting hunters and super-soldiers. It can also work against leader hunters.
- Along with the blade, you should also use it with the armor. The armor prevents hunters/leader hunters and super-soldiers from taking too much of your health away.
- When going against Blackwatch vehicles, use either the hammerfist or blade (the blade is the best). Using the blade power, make sure you get the blade air slice. As for helicopters, use the whipfist and either skyjack or destroy them.
Missions
- Before starting the 3rd mission (Behind The Glass), you should get the diveroll upgrade. This will help you dodge the attacks from the hunters.
- When doing the 13th mission (Things To Come), it is good to use the tendril barrage devastator. It will deplete or kill the hunters completely depending on what difficulty you are on.
Bosses
- There are multiple ways to defeat MOTHER boss, but one of the efficient ways is the whipfist. Go around in a circle around MOTHER. When you get the bars down, use the blade to attack her. Consume for health when needed.
- Like the MOTHER boss, the Supreme Hunter has several strategies to defeat it. The first time when you fight the boss, use the whipfist or throw things at it. When the tanks arrive, use them to get the hunter down until it is down. For the second round, the strategy that I used was throwing things that were docked on the ship using muscle-mass. It is best to upgrade the muscle-mass to its fullest.
- These strategies not working for you? If you want to read on different strategies, go to the Prototype wiki. There will be a link to both bosses wiki page.
Achievements
- For Trail of Corpse, you should wait until you are almost or completely done with the game. From there, you should kill a bunch of infected by using the tendril barrage devastator.
- To Get Speed Bumps, you should run over 500 characters while doing the 5th mission The Wheels Of Chance. Before dropping off Karen, run over pedestrians until it unlocks.
- For Return Fire, it is best to do it on the 22nd mission The World Set Free. When the hydras appear, throw the object back at the hydra to get the achievement.
- For The Butcher, do it on the 5th mission The Wheels Of Chance. You will get a tank where you can shoot with rockets. Use the rockets on pedestrians.
- For both AU and PT, you will need all the upgrades. Getting these two achievements can be tough, but if you want to know each strategy, I suggest you get the Prima guide, which is a strategy guide which I will provide the links down on the bibliography.
Prototype 2 Game Hints
Defeating Blackwatch/Infected
- For killing the brawler hunters or juggernauts, use the tendril power on the infected.
- As for supersoldiers, block their attacks and make sure you hit the button on time. Like the first game, use the blade to fight them.
- To kill the evolved, use the hammerfists power. The hammerfists power prevents the evolved from attacking you.
Bosses
- When get the mission Fall From Grace when fighting the goliath, you can use both close or distant attacks. If you are using close range attacks, use the blade power to defeat the goliath.
- For fighting Alex, there are three stages for his boss fight. For the first round, use something quick like claws or hammerfists. For the second round, use the blade or whipfist then on the third round, use the whipfist. Block Alex attacks with the shield.
Achievements
- For Icarus and The Floor Is Lava, go to the red zone. For Icarus, go to the coordinates 717, 216 and climb to the top. For The Floor Is Lava, you will need all movement upgrades to get this achievement.
- For Strike, Your Out achievement can be obtained by using a tank. Activiate a strike team and use the missile launchers. It is best to do it in the yellow zone.
Glossary
Overview Of Two Games
- Prototype: A 2009 action-adventure open-world game made by Radical Entertainment and published by Activision. Prototype follows Alex Mercer, a powerful shapeshifter that has no memory of his past. As he finds out about his past, there are two factions that he deals with: Blackwatch and the Infected.
- Prototype 2: Released in 2012, Prototype 2 is the sequel to Prototype. The game follows James Heller, a US Marine that is seeking revenge after the death of his family. Infected with the Blacklight virus, James Heller goes against Blackwatch, the infected, and the person responsible for the second outbreak: Alex Mercer.
- Radical Entertainment: The developer of the Prototype games. Based in Canada, they developed games for different video game companies until they were acquired by Activision. Most of their games are based off of popular movies like Scarface: The World Is Yours or comic book characters like Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. Prototype is their first IP.
- Activision: The publisher of Prototype. They were founded in 1979 by a Atari employee. Activision became the first third-party video game publisher. They are mostly popular for the Call Of Duty franchise, but also for other IPs like Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Guitar Hero, etc.
Story
- Hope, Idaho: The military town that started the whole story. After the successful Carnival I experiment, the military wanted to have a town where they can test the virus on human subjects. This is where Elizabeth Greene was located, who adapted the virus.
- Carnival I: One of the military experiments the government did. The subjects of the experiments were chimpanzees and the results were positive. From there, the government decided to do it on humans, which became Carnival II.
- Carnival II: The second military experiment that had humans as subjects rather than chimps. For the experiment, they created a town called Hope, Idaho. Unlike Carnival I, effects weren’t shown in the humans until the Hope Children were born.
- Redlight Virus: The virus that was used for both Carnival experiments. This is the virus that Elizabeth Greene is infected with and was used to create the Blacklight virus.
- Gentek: A genetic engineering company that Alex Mercer worked for. Founded by Raymond McMullen, Gentek is responsible for the creation of Blacklight virus. They also have a lot of correlations with Blackwatch.
- Blacklight Virus: The second important virus in the story, the Blacklight Virus is the virus that found a perfect host in Alex. Using samples from Elizabeth Greene, the Blacklight Virus is far more dangerous than the Redlight Virus.
- Penn Station: Short for Pennsylvania Station, it is a train station located in New York City. This is where both Blacklight outbreaks happened.
- Yellow/Green/Red Zone: The three zones that separates different parts of Manhattan in Prototype 2. Each zone has different levels of infected: the Yellow Zone is mix between regular citizens and infected, the green zone is the safest one out of the three, and the Red Zone is all infected.
- Whitelight: A “cure” that is supposed to take care of the Blacklight Virus that was developed by Dr. Archer. Unbeknownst to Gentek, Dr. Archer was working with Alex and was able to taint it with his DNA, infecting people rather than curing them.
- Anti-Hero: A character in the story who lacks morals or ideal heroic qualities like courage or idealism. Anti-heroes can either work for the good or bad side. There are anti-heroes in many forms of entertainment such as video games, movies, TV shows, and comics.
Characters
Prototype (Main Characters)
- Alex Mercer: The main protagonist of Prototype. Infected with the Blacklight Virus, he uses his shapeshifting powers to find out what happened to him and his past. As the story progresses, Alex finds out that he used to work for Gentek and that he helped create the Blacklight virus. In the second game, Alex becomes the main villain.
- Dana Mercer: Alex’s sister who helps Alex find out what his past by finding key targets. She is an investigative journalist who worked for multiple tabloids. She is one of the two NPCs that helps Alex throughout the game. In the second game, she assists James Heller while in the red zone.
- Elizabeth Greene: One of the main villains of Prototype. As a result of Carnival II, she became a perfect host for the Redlight virus, the virus that started it all. She appears as a boss codenamed MOTHER.
- Karen Parker: Alex’s ex-girlfriend who also worked for Gentek. She was an ally for Alex by sending to collect genetic material that will help find a cure for the virus. However, she betrayed him when she sent him into a hive where he fought Specialist Cross.
- Dr. Ragland: The second NPC who helped Alex. He is a pathologist that was introduced in the game when Alex had a parasite injected into him by Robert Cross. Dr. Ragland also helped Alex in getting his sister back.
- PARIAH: Elizabeth Greene’s child. He was born when Elizabeth was in Hope, Idaho. As theorized by Raymond, PARIAH is the only being to stop Alex and that it would be bad if the two of them met. The mystery of PARIAH is still unknown.
Prototype (Blackwatch)
- Blackwatch: A controversial military organization that is responsible for taking care of biological outbreaks. Their history goes back to Hope, Idaho incident, where they were supposed to “contain ” the outbreak. Their methods are considered to be brutal and immoral.
- General Randall: The leader of Blackwatch’s operations. He was present in Hope, Idaho, and when Elizabeth Greene gave birth to PARIAH.
- Specialist Cross: A lieutenant who worked with Blackwatch. When something goes wrong, Blackwatch hires Cross to get the job done. Robert Cross led the Wisemen team, a team of Blackwatch operatives that are tasked with containing Alex. Unlike other Blackwatch personal, Cross was the only enemy to come over Alex’s side until he was consumed by the Supreme Hunter.
- Colonel Ian Taggart: The leader of the Marines who also followed General Randall’s orders. During the outbreak, Taggart challenge that Manhattan should be nuked. Because of this demand, it went against everything that Randall, Blackwatch, and the Marines.
- Super-Soldiers: Soldiers that were injected with the three week strain of Blacklight. Super-Soldiers are meant to fight powerful infected such as hunters and Alex. They also appear in Prototype 2.
- Raymond McMullen: The founder and CEO of Gentek. He was mostly interested in studying the redlight virus and Elizabeth’s infection. After what happened to Alex, he became interested in studying Alex.
Infected:
- Walkers: Regular citizens who turned into infected. They are the least powerful out of all of the infected enemies and can be used to restore health.
- Hunters/Leader Hunters: One of the most powerful infected, hunters are the most agile of the infected. Hunter’s characteristics include looking like a gorilla for appearance but move like a fast dog. Leader Hunters are another variant of hunters.
- Hydras: A variant of the hunters that were created when Elizabeth Greene was released. Unlike the hunters, they can burrow underground and are capable to throw objects at their enemies.
Prototype 2
Prototype 2 (Main Characters)
- James Heller: The main protagonist of Prototype 2. A former sergeant in the army, he became infected with Blacklight after Alex infected him. Throughout the game, he finds out the truth of Alex Mercer and his plans, Blackwatch, and Gentek. At the end of the game, he gets his daughter back after killing Alex.
- Father Guerra: A priest that aids James in the game. According to the wiki and the interactions between James, Guerra’s past seemed to be tough before he became a priest. He led an alliance against Gentek and Blackwatch until his death from the infected.
Prototype 2 (Blackwatch)
- Colonel Rooks: After the death of General Randall, Colonel Rooks took over Blackwatch’s operations. When James escaped Gentek, Rooks made it Blackwatch’s priority to find James and kill him.
- Lt. Clint Riley: Colonel Rooks right-hand man. He follows whatever orders Rooks gives like defending scientists, any operations Blackwatch does, and capturing James Heller. He was eventually killed by James Heller.
Prototype 2 (Minor Characters)
- Amaya Heller: James Heller daughter who supposedly died along with her mother. Towards the end of the game, it turned out that she is still alive under Blackwatchs care until one of the evolved kidnapped her and took her to Alex.
- Barnes Griffin: An agent that was responsible for transferring Amaya. He was also working on a project titled PARIAH, Elizabeth Greene’s child and is the only time PARIAH was mentioned in Prototype 2.
Prototype 2 (Infected)
- Evolved: Alex Mercer’s henchmen. Most evolved secretly work for Blackwatch or Gentek. While not as strong as Alex, they are still powerful. They have powers similar to Alex and James.
- Brawler Hunters: A type of infected that is similar to hunters from Prototype. They are slightly bigger and brawny than the hunters. There is another type of brawler hunters known as spiked brawler.
- Juggernauts: A new form of infected introduced on Prototype 2. Juggernauts are considered to be the tank of the infected. They can block from attacks and can deal huge damage to their enemies.
Gameplay Terms
Alex Powers (Offense)
- Claws: The first offense power that Alex gets after consuming a hunter. Used against any enemy that is human-sized, the claws are three sharp talons. The claws has about five upgrades, including groundspike.
- Muscle-Mass: A ability that increases Alex’s strength. It is perfect to use when you need to throw things at enemies. When upgrading this offense power, the strength becomes stronger, taking more damage.
- Hammerfist: Another offense power that can be used against tanks. The hammerfists are large fists used to crush enemies. Heller gets hammerfists after consuming a juggernaut that is able to create ground-spikes.
- Blade: A offense power that Alex gets when curing the parasite that was feeding on him. Much like the hammerfists, the blade can be used against tanks, but also is useful against hunters or super-soldiers. There are three upgrades for blade.
- Whipfist: The last offense power that Alex has, the whipfist is a long appendage with a sharp spear blade at the end. The whipfist is good for spearing helicopters and skyjacking them or take them down.
James Powers (Offense)
- Tendrils: Replacing the muscle-mass power that Alex has, the tendrils are three fingered hands, each containing biomass. Tendrils are great against brawler hunters and juggernauts. It can also be used against Blackwatch vehicles like tanks.
Defense Powers:
- Shield: One of the defense powers that Alex and James has, the shield is a good defense power to protect Alex or James from any oncoming attacks. With Alex shield, it only stays on his left arm and needs to regenerate if it is hit too much. However, with James shield, it covers both arms and won’t break compared to Alex.
- Armor: Using a immense amount of biomass, the armor covers Alex completely. The armor power is good to use when going against bigger enemies as this will prevent them from taking too much damage.
Alex Sensory Powers
- Thermal Vision: One of the sensory powers Alex can use. Thermal vision is used to find key targets that are hidden in smoke or other stuff.
- Infected Vision: The second sensory power that can used to find infected individuals. This power was first used when tapping into the hive mind.
James Sensory Powers
- Hunting Ability: Replacing Thermal and Infected vision, the hunting ability is used by James to find key targets to progress through the story or Blacknet. The hunting ability sends out a pulse that will come back quick when James gets closer to the target. When upgraded, it can also be used to see if the target is being watched.
Other Powers:
- Consume/Disguise: Consuming is an essential power that Alex and James use. They can either consume human enemies or infected. When consuming a human enemy, they gain their disguise and memories, making it easy for them to inflitrate bases or decrease a alert. It can also give them their health back.
- Devastators: Large area attacks that both Alex and James has. Both characters have different devastators, Alex has the tendril barrage, groundspike graveyard, and critical pain while James has the pack leader, biomass expulsion, and juggernaut devastator.
Bosses
- MOTHER: After pumping bloodtox, a bulbous, giant creature comes out from the ground with Elizabeth Greene at its core. MOTHER is the codename for Elizabeth and is the second boss fought in Prototype.
- Supreme Hunter: The second and final boss of Prototype. Considered by fans as a twisted clone of Elizabeth, the Supreme Hunter is fought two times throughout the game. The Supreme Hunter is about ten feet tall and is described as being muscular.
Prototype 2 Bosses
- Goliath: A monstrous infected create introduced in Prototype 2. Similar to the Supreme Hunter, its tall and its limbs are different proportions. Despite its size, it is also fast and agile even with its limbs cut off.
Other Gameplay Terms
- Web Of Intrigue (WOI): Targets that Alex and James can consume. Some targets are mandatory while others are optional. When Alex or James consume a target, they gain their memories. They are important to consume to understand the story.
- Events: Different activities that you can do when exploring Manhattan. In Prototype, there are four different events: kill, war, movement, and glide. There are also consume events that either destroy a hive or inflitrate/destroy a military base. Prototype 2 also has events that are part of Radnet.
- Collectibles: Objects that you can find scattered around Manhattan. In Prototype, there are two major collectibles that are orbs: hints, which are purple orbs, and landmarks, which are blue orbs. Prototype 2 has a little more collectibles than Prototype with Black-boxes, audio recordings that can be recovered from dead soldiers; lairs, infected hives where you can kill infected creatures to upgrade powers, and field-ops, scientist and Blackwatch troopers that you can kill.
- Achievements: Certain milestones that gamers can get in a game. There are achievements for both XBox and Playstation. Games can have small, medium, or a lot of achievements to obtain. Prototype has 40 achievements while Prototype 2 has 43 achievements.
